illuminating the self with the light of Christ
In this series of paintings, ‘Let Your Light Shine’, Gayle Ebose depicts 12 women who allow the light of Christ to illuminate their existence. She allows the storytelling of each woman to determine the direction of the brushstrokes and the application of paint. Her gestures are based on the conversation which takes place with her subjects. The sittings are organic, and their exchange of words like two friends simply catching up on life’s tales. These paintings were made over video calls; each woman, both the sitter and the painter are in their own space, comfortable and at ease, enjoying the radiance of one another’s presence.

A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD
each part woven together to make a whole
‘A Royal Priesthood’ is a series of paintings, which comes from a place of wanting to express strength in unity. The church, like many other institutions, could not meet corporately over the first UK lockdown. Yet each of these women not only represent different local churches, but the wider Church universal. As a portrait painter, Gayle Ebose is intrigued by faces - everything to do with its expression and quaintness - her examination of these women, and her love for their individual and unique characters, is what drew her to paint them. Each are a reminder of the diversity in Christ - any, all, can be saved, if only they submit and put their trust in the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, the forgiver of sins.
