Joy Always Comes in the Morning

SOLO EXHIBITION

14th - 31st October 2022

Joy Always Comes in the Morning is an exhibition culminating multiple series of works made by Gayle Ebose in the last three years. The title is derived from a verse in the Christian scriptures Psalm 30, where the writer reflects on the moving experiences of life, where ‘weeping may occur in the night, but joy comes with the morning’. It is an encapsulation of Ebose’s continuous thought processes towards life’s joys and sorrows wrapped simultaneously in the human experience and reflects the journey of her practice so far as she works on her visual language of expressing hope, contemplation, faith and anchoring in the faces of her subjects.

Joy Always Comes in the Morning is an exhibition that is both reflective and celebratory, drawing from many conversations she had over video calls with friends during the pandemic and yet opens new ways of making as we move forward as a society within our communities.

Through this global experience, Gayle Ebose’s work became almost a healing space for her and her subjects as they exchanged words of encouragement over video calls and reminded one another of the hope they had through such trying times. The works are akin to documents and biographies of a collective moment in time. The pandemic was a blessing in disguise to her process of making and continues to inform her practice today.
